Lewis Hamilton secured a strong P6 at the Canadian GP. Despite the seven-time World Champion’s disappointment after qualifying on Saturday, he appeared satisfied with his performance in the race.
When speaking in the media pen after the race, Hamilton was asked if there was damage to the car. The seven-time-world-champion ran over a groundhog on lap 13 which caused mighty floor damage to deal with for the remaining 57 laps.
“Yeah, on the front of the floor. The whole front of the floor is basically destroyed on the right side.” he explained.
Race compromised by floor damage and break issues
Considering the damage, the result was quite good even if he would have hoped for a higher position than P6 at the beginning of the race weekend.
Both Ferrari drivers struggled early on this weekend with making mistakes during free practice, and being left dissatisfied after qualifying.
The duo qualified P5 and P8 on Saturday which left both drivers hoping to make up positions in the race. However, as Hamilton suffered damage early on while Leclerc was left forlorn with the strategy, it seems that a podium finish was not possible this time.
“Yeah, no, definitely. To still get sixth with that damage, I’m really, really grateful so I’ll definitely take it.” Hamilton stated.
The seven-time World Champion finished right behind his teammate, Charles Leclerc, who managed to grab a P5 finish despite dealing with lico for most of the race. Additionally, Hamilton revealed that he almost suffered from a brake failure during the race.
“We also almost had a brake failure as well, so the pedal went super long. I had to manage these breaks for a period of time and then they came back towards the end. So given those issues, I’m grateful for the points.” the champion explained.
Taking both the floor damage and having to manage the break issues into consideration, the Ferrari driver did well with a P6 finish. Ferrari will hope to have a better weekend at the next race in Austria. After a tough weekend for the team, he will aim to bounce back at the Red Bull Ring.
