Scuderia Ferrari have had a tricky weekend at the Canadian GP. With Charles Leclerc’s crash in FP1, and Lewis Hamilton not feeling comfortable with the car, the weekend has been quite the challenge for both drivers. Despite the circumstances, Hamilton managed to secure a P5 finish in Saturday’s Qualifying.
The seven-time World Champion bluntly revealed that he believed pole position was never a realistic possibility. Hamilton also mentioned his former team, Mercedes, and their success at the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit.
When asked about how it felt to miss out on pole, and getting P5 in qualifying, Hamilton candidly responded:
“We were never going to get pole, I think, clearly. Mercedes brought an upgrade, I think or I just heard, so, congrats to them. Their cars always suited this track, so it’s good, happy for them.”
Not feeling at one with the car
Although lining up P5 on the grid for the race on Sunday appears positive, they were still more than half a second behind the lap time of polesitter, and Hamilton’s former teammate, George Russell.
The champion quickly moved on to speak about the struggles Ferrari have been experiencing this weekend, candidly stating:
“On our side, it’s been very, very, very, tricky. But I think a better performance than Ferrari had last year, which is positive. And still going to be gunning for, trying to see if we can get a podium for once. That will be the goal for tomorrow.”
It is clear that despite the disappointment in qualifying, Hamilton still sees some positives to take from the weekend.
After the team failed to get either driver in the top ten during qualifying last year, followed by the double DNF during the race, one would hope that this year can only be better. With this season being Hamilton’s first as a Ferrari driver, it is expected that not everything can fall into place at once.
Additionally, when asked about the feeling of the car and trying to push it to its limits, Hamilton bluntly responded:
“I don’t feel at one with the car. I haven’t all year. I don’t know if I will this year.”
The Ferrari driver’s disappointment is understandable as the season has been immensely challenging for the team.
