As the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship gears up for Round 5, the series makes a much-anticipated return to Miami.
Round 5 of the championship marks the first time since the inaugural 2014–15 season that Miami will host an E-Prix, signalling a significant moment in Formula E’s expansion in the United States.
Formula E’s Journey in the United States
The United States has played a pivotal role in Formula E’s history. The 2015 Miami E-Prix was held on the Biscayne Bay Street Circuit, where Nicolas Prost clinched victory.
American races included the Long Beach E-Prix and the New York City E-Prix, with the latter becoming a staple on the calendar from 2017 onwards.
In 2023 and 2024, the series ventured to the Pacific Northwest with the Portland E-Prix at Portland International Raceway.
Now, in 2025, Miami reclaims its spot on the calendar, this time at the Homestead-Miami Speedway’s road course.
Season So Far
The season has been nothing short of electrifying. Mitch Evans of Jaguar Racing kicked things off with a remarkable victory in São Paulo, storming from last to first. However, consistency has proven elusive, with a 19th-place finish in Saudi Arabia and DNFs in both Mexico and the second race in Jeddah.
Pascal Wehrlein’s season has been a rollercoaster, beginning with a dramatic crash in São Paulo that left him concussed and out of the points. He bounced back impressively with a podium finish in Mexico City, showing the grit of a reigning champion. Now eighth in the standings with 25 points, Wehrlein heads to Miami looking to reignite his title defence and push Porsche back into the championship fight.
Oliver Rowland with Nissan has emerged as a formidable contender, securing victory in Mexico City and leading the championship standings by 17 points over his prodigy, Taylor Barnard.
Rookie Barnard has also made headlines with multiple podium finishes, demonstrating the depth of talent entering the series. Will he become the youngest winner in Formula E history this weekend?
What to Expect
The Homestead-Miami Speedway, traditionally known for hosting NASCAR events, presents a unique challenge for Formula E teams and drivers. The road course layout will test the adaptability of the Gen3 Evo cars—especially in terms of energy management and tyre wear.
Teams such as Jaguar TCS Racing will be eager to rebound from recent setbacks. Nick Cassidy’s impressive drive from seventeenth to fifth in Jeddah highlights the team’s potential when strategies come together. Meanwhile, Nissan will aim to maintain momentum, with Rowland leading the charge to consolidate their advantage in the standings.
Oliver Rowland and Nissan to continue their form?
Rowland and Nissan have nailed their start to Season 11, and remain the pacesetters for the rest of the field.
A combination of battery preservation and ability to deploy speed have put Nissan powered teams in a fantastic position this season, this looks set to continue in Miami.
The battle of Apprentice vs Master will once again commence this weekend. Rowland has the advantage of experience, but Taylor Barnard and McLaren are hot on their heels.
Can Taylor Barnard win his maiden race?
Barnard mwanwhile, has been the star of Season 11 to date without question. His performances have impressed the paddock and fans.
His mature attitude to racing and ability to stay calm have netted him a pole position and both steps on the podium below the winner in the opening rounds.
Fastest Formula News spoke exclusively to Barnard after his outstanding performance in Jeddah, and he spoke of his aims to win in the sunshine state.
If he wins, he will replicate Lando Norris’s achievement in F1 of taking his first win in Miami. All eyes will be on him to see if he can stop Rowland and Nissan.
World Champions need a breakthrough
Both Jaguar drivers and reigning World Champion Pascal Wehrlein have endured difficult starts to Season 11.
While Wherlein has been able to at least keep pace at the front of the field, the Jaguars resemble timid kittens rather than leaping cats.
With powertrain issues plaguing the car, Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy look set for another challenging weekend.
Both are of championship quality, so if an opportunity presents itself for points or a podium, it will be taken. In Miami however, this possibility remains doubtful.
