Lando Norris took victory in an exciting F1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, ahead of McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri and Nico Hulkenberg on the podium.
The 2025 British GP was certainly dramatic, with five drivers retiring and changing conditions bringing the best out of Norris in front of the ‘Landostand‘. The result sees Norris close the gap on Piastri to only eight points in the Driver’s Standings. Norris capitalised on the 10-second time penalty that Piastri received for braking heavily under the safety car.
Immediately reacting in Parc Fermé, Norris was emotional about the “beautiful” victory and thanked his fans for their support.
Norris over the moon with a career-highlight performance
After missing out on victory at the 2024 F1 British GP, Norris made no mistake in seeing out victory today. The Briton was cool despite pressure from Piastri, and took an emotional first win at Silverstone in Formula 1.
“It’s beautiful. Everything I dreamed of, I guess. Everything I’ve ever wanted to achieve.
“Apart from a Driver’s Championship, I think this is as good as it gets in terms of feelings, in terms of achievement, being proud, all of it. You know, this is where it all started for me, was watching you [Jenson Button] on TV many years ago. And now, thankfully, I’ve been able to have my go.”
On managing the last couple of laps before taking victory
The British driver has received criticism for how he handles pressure, but his performance today was a masterclass. Norris was asked about what was going through his mind on the final laps, under such pressure.
“Your mind just goes pretty blank. So, everything you might think before the race, you forget. Yeah, I mean, the main thing is always just don’t **** it up. That’s rule number one.
“But, you know, the last few laps, I was just looking into the crowd. I was just trying to take it all in, enjoy the moment, because it might never happen again. I hope it does, but these are memories that I’ll bring with me forever.”
While the victory at Silverstone is McLaren’s first since Lewis Hamilton in 2008, recent seasons have shown that Norris may be able to enjoy this feeling again.
Norris with plenty of praise for Piastri and his team
The remaining half of the season will prove to be an exciting one as Norris and Piastri battle for the Driver’s Championship. While Piastri will be upset with how his race unfolded, Norris was quick to praise the Kiwi’s drive.
“It was a good race for Oscar as well. I’ve got to give my credits to Oscar. He was fast the whole way. So, yeah, a round of applause for Oscar, because he put up a good fight. And I enjoy those moments together when we’re on track. Not as much when he’s ahead of me as when he’s behind, but, you know, that’s life.”
On his team, Norris added: “Credits to McLaren. To win at home in front of all the friends and family we have here is pretty amazing. So, a big thanks to them.”
Norris thankful for the “amazing” fans
Norris has enjoyed strong support on home soil in recent years, boosted by the sold-out ‘Landostand’ in 2025. The McLaren man spoke emotionally about the “beautiful” support he received from his home crowd.
“It’s always hard, right? Because before the race, I’m like, I want to give them something to cheer about. But, you know, it’s a long 52 laps, and you never know what’s going to happen, especially when it’s raining earlier.
“So, it’s always hard to imagine what it’s going to be like. But now I’m feeling it, and it’s unbelievable. So, thanks to all the fans, all the British fans, all the McLaren fans. And a shoutout to my grandstand in the corner, because I gave all my credits to them. They were amazing, they cheered me on every lap, and it was a really beautiful thing.”
