Four-time World Champion and Red Bull legend, Sebastian Vettel has revealed that he has held initial discussions with Helmut Marko about a potential future role within the Red Bull Racing F1 team. The German driver, who enjoyed his greatest success with the team between 2010 and 2013, spoke openly about the prospect of succeeding the long-time Red Bull advisor when the Austrian eventually steps down.
Vettel’s historic Red Bull era and post-racing activities
Vettel’s time at Red Bull marked the peak of his F1 career. Between 2010 and 2013, he powered the team to their first four Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles in a dominant run that firmly established both himself and Red Bull at the top of the sport.
Following his departure from the team at the end of 2014, Vettel raced for Ferrari and Aston Martin before retiring from F1 at the conclusion of the 2022 season. Across his career, he amassed 53 wins, 122 podiums, and 57 pole positions.
Since retiring, Vettel has remained connected to the sport. He has led tributes to Ayrton Senna at Imola and Sao Paulo and hosted the Race4Women event in Saudi Arabia, which aims to support grassroots karting development.
Early talks about succeeding Marko
In a recent interview with ORF TV’s Sport am Sonntag podcast, Vettel discussed his ongoing relationship with Helmut Marko and the possibility of taking on a more official role within Red Bull in the future. He stated: “There have been a few headlines recently. I still get along great with Helmut, and we’re in contact regarding the topic. [Talks are] not yet that intensive or in-depth, it’s perhaps something that could play a role. In what form remains to be seen.”
Vettel respects Marko’s irreplaceable role
Vettel stressed that Marko is “irreplaceable,” praising his immense contribution to the team’s success since their entry into F1 in 2005. He added, “His character alone… and he’s made a very, very significant contribution to what the entire team has achieved over the years since 2005. And perhaps it wouldn’t even be the goal to have someone replace him.”
The German also expressed hope that Marko remains in his position for some time.
“He’s said a few times that he’s going to quit, but he’s still here. I hope he stays with us for a long time. But of course, at some point, things will inevitably move on, and he knows that. He’s a brutal realist and can assess things quite well. He’ll sense when the time is right.”
Although Vettel admitted that he has not been close to Marko in recent years, he emphasised the ongoing opportunity to learn from the veteran advisor.
“I have to admit, though, that I haven’t been that close in recent years. But I do think I know what he’s doing. And no matter what happens, there’s still a lot to learn from him.”
No imminent appointment but possibility remains
Vettel’s comments suggest that while no formal appointment is imminent, a future role within Red Bull’s management or advisory structure remains a possibility. Given his deep knowledge of the team’s culture and success, as well as his continued engagement with motorsport, Vettel could provide valuable experience when the time comes to succeed Marko.
