Penalties have been handed out to Andretti Global and Prema Racing following the conclusion of the 109th Indy 500.
Technical violations sees penalties brought
In a statement, IndyCar confirmed, following the conclusion of the 109th Indy 500, post race penalties have been handed out for the Nos. 27 and 28 cars of Andretti Global, and the No. 90 car of Prema Racing.
All three cars were found to be in violation of Rule 9.3.1, pertaining to team members engaging, or attempting to engage in, unsportsmanlike or unsafe conduct that would be considered harmful to racing.
Andretti Global was also found to have modified the Dallara-supplied Energy Management system cover and cover-to-A-arm mounting points. Per IndyCar, the Dallara supplied units on an Indy Car are required to be used as received, unmodified by the teams. Modifications made to the EMS cover unit were found to have given it enhanced aerodynamics. The teams use of unapproved spacers and parts incurred them significant penalties.
In addition to improper conduct, Prema Racing also incurred technical penalties post race. The endplate of the No. 90 car was found to be outside regulated height. Endplates, wing flaps, and mainplanes of the No. 90 cars front wing were also found to be out of place.
These actions have consequences
The penalties incurred by both Andretti Global and Prema Racing, post Indy 500, for these violations are steep. Cars Nos. 27, 28, 90 have incurred both positional and monetary penalties. The affected cars have been reordered to the rear of the field based on their finishing positions.
Additionally, each car has a $100,000 fine paid by the teams. The team or competition mangers for the affected entries have also been given one-race suspensions to be served at the Streets of Detroit, the next NTT IndyCar Series event.
Andretti Global drivers Marcus Ericsson and Kyle Kirkwood, who originally finished 2nd and 6th in the Nos. 27 and 28 cars, were relegated to 31st and 32nd. Prema Racing’s Callum Ilott in the No. 90 car found himself in 33rd from 12th.
Prize money and championship points earned during the Indy 500 are in relation to the finalised and official finishing positions.
