Former Formula 1 presenter Will Buxton shocked many with his recent move to Fox Sports’ IndyCar coverage.
Moving away from Formula 1,Buxton has opened up on the skill level required to compete in IndyCar. The veteran presenter suggests some F1 drivers fear making the switch.
Buxton’s Perspective on the Challenge of the series
In a recent interview with Motorsport Magazine, Buxton highlighted what makes IndyCar such a formidable racing series. He pointed out that many F1 drivers have hesitations about competing in IndyCar. Buxton pinpointed the issues to the inherent risks and intense competition. He labelled the IndyCar drivers as “absolute daredevils.”
“When you ask F1 drivers, ‘Would you go and race IndyCar?’ a lot of them say, ‘Oh, I don’t know, I think it might be a bit dangerous.’ When you have F1 guys saying ‘We’re a bit scared about IndyCar,’ it shows you the level that these drivers are at.”
Buxton emphasised the high level of skill required to race in IndyCar, noting the number of overtakes and driver versatility needed to compete. Due to the series’ mix of street and road circuits as well as the high-speed ovals, drivers have to be talented across different aspects.
“The fact that they can go out and race these things shows such tremendous skills, such incredible speeds, and such brilliant race-craft as well,” he added. “You look at the number of overtakes for position at every single IndyCar race, it’s just astonishing.”
A Bold Move for Buxton
Buxton’s decision to join Fox Sports’ IndyCar team was unexpected due to how interlinked he is with F1. However, he insisted that his move doesn’t intend to criticise Formula 1. Rather, it allows IndyCar to broaden its already major audience.
“[For me] it’s always been about that on-screen relationship, making the folks at home feel a part of that… Making them feel like you’re just sitting down at the pub with your mates and having a chat about racing. I think that’s really important.”
The former F1 TV star expressed his excitement about IndyCar’s expanded network coverage on Fox. Buxton believes this will help bring the series to new heights in 2025. He ultimately believes the series belongs.
“That’s absolutely huge if we’re going to grow the sport to where I think it deserves to be, and where Fox believes it deserves to be. When new fans think about tuning in for the first time, they’re going to know exactly where to find it”.
IndyCar’s Appeal in the Racing World
Formula 1 is still the most dominant force in the global motorsports sector. However, IndyCar continues to grow throughout North America. With the series’ reputation for close racing, unpredictable outcomes and wheel-to-wheel racing, it has become a vastly popular series amongst Motorsport fans.
Whilst Buxton isn’t a racing driver, his move to IndyCar coverage is a testament to the series’ growth. His passion for the sport is undeniable, with the Briton adamant that this sport will reach new levels in the coming years.
“If we’re going to grow the sport to where I think it deserves to be and where Fox believes it deserves to be. When new fans think about tuning in for the first time, they’re going to know exactly where to find it.”
With the 2025 season on the horizon, all eyes turn to the shaken-up grid for the upcoming season. With so many storylines coming into this new year, it will surely be a thriller for new IndyCar fans.
