Alex Palou topped the first day of Indy 500 qualifying on a day of high pressure at the famous oval. Despite four days of practice sessions, many questions remained ahead of Indy 500 qualifying. A relatively quiet start to practice came to an abrupt end on Friday when Kyle Larson dramatically flipped his car. A more dramatic crash took place in the final session before qualifying. Rick Mears, four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, currently works for Penske in an advisory role. Mears attended Friday’s Press Conference with Penske drivers Will Power, Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin and Penske President Tim Cindric. The IndyCar legend, drove in IndyCar racing from 1976-1992, most successfully for Penske, winning the iconic race four times. He is one of just four drivers to have achieved this accolade. Similar to yesterday’s conditions, delays impacted running at Indianapolis, but after an hour the second practice session ahead of the Indy 500, finally got underway. Opening thirty minutes Immediately drivers were going for lap times at Indianapolis. Kyffin Simpson, Colton Herta and Nolan Siegel were the first to take to the track for practice. After two hours and 34 minutes of delay, Gasoline Alley finally had engines running as practice for the Indy 500 began. For some, it was the first time that the hybrid had ran around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. 34 drivers were going to attempt to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 after last weekend’s Sonsio GP. Starting on pole for the Sonsio Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was Alex Palou after he took back-to-back poles. In warm-up, Josef Newgarden led from Christian Lundgaard, Scott Dixon and Palou. Opening laps and First Quarter Before the race even began, Kyffin Simpson had gearbox trouble on pit road. On Sunday during the 2025 F1 Miami Grand Prix, one of F1’s oldest living GP winners, Jochen Mass, passed away aged 78. Early career Mass began his career in the late 60s. He progressed to Formula Two in 1972, but his main focus that year was the European Touring Car Championship. Mass won five times and took eight podiums.
