George Russell has revelled in his Canadian GP victory, taking his first win since the 2024 Las Vegas GP.
Securing a lights-to-flag victory at the Canadian GP, George Russell looked in complete control in Montreal.
Nailing his start, he resisted and soaked up pressure from Max Verstappen in the early stages of the race. Verstappen was unable to pass the Briton, and Russell successfully covered off the Dutchman during his pitstop windows.
The late Safety Car, deployed as a result of Lando Norris’ crash with team-mate Oscar Piastri, secured the win for the Briton.
Speaking in Parc Ferme after the race, Russell admitted his delight at ending his victory drought. He also revealed how he secured the victory.
“It’s amazing to be back on the top step. Obviously the last time for us was back in Vegas. I felt last year was a victory lost and then obviously we got the victory today probably due to the incredible pole lap yesterday and obviously so happy to see Kimi on the podium as well.”
A strong day for George Russell at the Canadian GP
Russell thanked his team for their efforts in securing the win, aware that the victory could be a pivotal turning point in its season.
“So amazing day for the team, thanks to everybody. Back at the factory, they’ve been working so hard to get us back, fighting for victories and yeah, it was good.”
Asked if the W16 has had any fundamental changes to it since Spain, Russell said the weather conditions played a part in the result.
“No, it’s a little bit cooler around here. We saw it last year in Canada. I’d love to get our hopes up but I think the strength of our car is in these cooler conditions and less eager to become in races but we’ll just enjoy it for now.
Pressed on if he and Mercedes can repeat their victory at the next round in Austria, George Russell remained firmly grounded.
“I mean we won Austria last year so maybe that’s a good omen but we’ll enjoy it for the time being. We did have high expectations coming into this weekend and it worked out as we thought so yeah, good day, good day.”
Russell’s victory keeps him fifth in the Driver’s Championship. He has reduced the gap to third placed Verstappen to 19 points ahead of the next round.
