Marcus Armstrong has hinted that he and Meyer Shank Racing could have a strong weekend as IndyCar prepares for the Detroit GP.
Arriving in Motor City ahead of the Detroit GP, Marcus Armstrong will aim to put a difficult Indy 500 behind him.
Returning to the tight and twisting layout of Detroit, Armstrong aims to emulate his podium finish in 2024. The track is vastly different to Indianapolis, the tight, twisting streets a polar opposite to the open oval.
Speaking on media day exclusively to Chaos in the Paddock and Fastest Formula News, we asked Marcus Armstrong for his thoughts ahead of the race weekend.
“It’s a tricky Mickey Mouse track,” he said. “I like it. It’s fun. It’s bumpy. We’re going to see what the weather throws at us this week.
“Detroit’s not normally very kind to us with the weather, but it seems dry at the moment, so that’s cool. We’re just going to do what we can this week.”
Given the dramatic difference in layout and skill required, we asked Armstrong if any mental or physical preparations are needed to adapt to Detroit. With the infamous Turn 3 hairpin, concentration is crucial to success on the streets.
“Physically, no. I don’t have any routines to help me through that. Mentally, no, , you just have to position yourself wisely, I think, because if you give anyone a sniffle opportunity, they’re going to take it, which usually ends in tears.
“So, I think we need to position ourselves well and not be too greedy. I don’t know. Turn three is a fun corner, honestly, but there are a lot of incidents.”
What can Marcus Armstrong and Meyer Shank Racing achieve in Detroit?
Team-mate Felix Rosenqvist has enjoyed strong results here in previous years. We asked Armstrong when combined with his results this season, what baseline this will set in Detroit.
“It’s the same as any weekend. We always have immense confidence on a Friday. We’re going to see how it evolves.
“You know, Felix is a good teammate to have. He’s very analytical. So I think that we kind of work well together. And we’re going to try and push each other forward and hopefully both be on the podium on Sunday.”
Coming into the Detroit GP, Marcus Armstrong lies 15h in the driver standings. He is 62 points points behind team-mate Rosenqvist.
