With the rain coming down in Australia, the F2 cars were lined up on the grid ready to embark on the first feature race of the season for the Australian Grand Prix.
As the cars lined up on the grid, Richard Verschoor’s MP Motorsport had an issue that caused a ten-minute delay at the start of the race. Verschoor had to start from the pit lane due to the delay or take on a drive-through penalty.
The 22 drivers embarked on the formation lap, with Victor Martins on pole leading the field around the track. The rain was streaming down, destroying the visibility around the track. As the cars began to make their way back to the start-finish line, the red flag waved.
With just under an hour delay, the cars made their way out on track for a formation lap. They assessed whether the amount of water on the track was survivable.
With the delay the time of the race was shortened to roughly 12 laps, with mandatory pit stops still on.
Oliver Goethe suffered a spin before the Safety Car disappeared into the pit lane. But he managed to keep the car on track. Unfortunately, as the car began to prepare for a rolling start, the rain persisted with a red flag being waved.
The result
The race was then cancelled with the time ticking down not allowing the drivers the opportunity to safely race in the conditions around Albert Park.
With no logged laps around Albert Park, there is no podium or points awarded to the drivers. However, it left Victor Martins who would’ve started on pole, looking to what could have been.
Formula 2 will return for the second of 14 rounds in Bahrain on the 12th and 13th of April. Hoping for the first feature race, undisrupted by weather.
