Jean-Éric Vergne made it to the podium in the second race of the Berlin E-Prix, surviving a chaotic tight pack race around Tempelhof circuit to finish P3.
Despite starting the Berlin E-Prix in 18th, Jean-Éric Vergne made a meteoric climb to the final podium place. It’s the fourth year Vergne had been on the podium in Berlin, finding unique success in front of the German crowd.
Berlin is the Frenchman’s second podium of the season, with the first coming in Shanghai race 1. Vergne was happy with his podium admitting it was nice to ‘end the weekend on a high.’
He told media after the race, “Feeling good. Obviously, I think it was good to end the weekend on a high. We had quite a bit of bad luck yesterday. I was running P3 when something broke on the front axle. I had to retire the car this morning.”
“Qualifying didn’t go well with the red flag. So yeah, it’s nice to have a bit of a break and finish on the podium.”
With his success around Berlin, Vergne was asked what about the Tempelhof airport brings him such consistent results. He joked that it may be a podium, but he hasn’t taken a win since the 2019/2020 season.
He said, “I don’t know. I’ve been on the podium, but I didn’t win. So I guess I still need to improve.”
From past to current champions
Following his P3, Vergne moved to sixth in the standings. His best season finish since he won the title back in season four and five has been P4 in the championship standings.
However, with Oli Rowland taking the title Vergne was quick to tell the Brit to enjoy his impressive year.
“He’s done a fantastic season. He was clearly the best by far this year. He’s been impressive all along. He should celebrate like the world champion that he is. Congratulations to you, man. It was a very strong season. He’s a world champion now.”
