Alex Palou secured his ninth career pole and third of the season at Mid-Ohio, with Christian Lundgaard and Kyffin Simpson completing the top three.
We reenter Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for Qualifying after two dramatic qualifying sessions. Race winners Kyle Kirkwood and Alex Palou topped Practice 1 and 2 respectively.
Round 1 Group 1
Once Group 1 got their first laps in, Scott McLaughlin was fastest but soon after the Arrow McLarens’ of Christian Lundgaard, Pato O’Ward, and Nolan Siegel jumping to the Top 3.
Devlin DeFrancsesco, Marcus Ericsson and Conor Daly, top the charts with the softer tires. With all the drivers on softs with two minutes left, Lundgaard topped the charts with Ericsson, Colton Herta, Kyffin Simpson behind him.
Christian Rasmussen was able to put his car in fourth. Scott McLaughlin tried to make it to the Fast 12, but was unsuccessful. O’Ward’s teammates both make it to the Fast 12 without him.
Lundgaard, Ericsson, Herta, Siegel, Rasmussen and Simpson advanced to Round 2 at Mid-Ohio.
Round 1 Group 2
Rookie Louis Foster was the fastest when the drivers set their first times on the softs. Other drivers early on the softs were Alexander Rossi, Rinus VeeKay and Felix Rosenqvist were at the top.
Josef Newgarden was the fastest on the hard in sixth with a 1:06.3487. With everyone on softs to get a better time in, Palou took the fastest time with a 1:05.2043 as VeeKay gets knocked out.
With drivers on their final push lap, Malukas jumps to fifth place, Scott Dixon placed himself into third. Foster held his second place as all the Penskes dropped out of qualifying.
Palou, Foster, Dixon, Kirkwood, Armstrong and Rossi advance to Round 2 at Mid-Ohio.
Round 2
The name of the game for Round 2 was if the used softs or the used hards would prevail. Louis Foster had his rear wheels on the dirt, but he was able to quickly head back to the track. Even after this incident, he was able to go fastest. Kirkwood entered the top with a 1:05.9140.
Nolan Siegel put himself in second with a 1:06.0205. Reigning Champion Palou slid himself into fourth with a 1:06.2646.
Lundgaard had an issue during his push lap, but he was able to get to the top of the timing sheet with a 1:05.1837. Soon after, Foster goes faster with a 1:05.0897 as Simpson knocked out Kirkwood of qualifying.
Foster, Lundgaard, Palou, Herta, Siegel and Simpson moved on to the Firestone Fast Six at Mid-Ohio.
Firestone Fast Six
Once everyone set their first laps, Siegel was the fastest with a 1:07.3709. Later, Foster found himself back at the top of the times with a 1:06.2398.
Palou found himself at the top as Lundgaard slid right under him as the checkered flag waved. Siegel jumped up to fourth place
Alex Palou earned his ninth career and third Pole Position this season at Mid-Ohio. Christian Lundgaard and Kyffin Simpson round out the Top 3.
