Sébastien Buemi got handed a five-second penalty, from the FIA, during the 2025 Formula E Jakarta E-Prix. For causing a collision between him and Edoardo Mortara. This penalty was now revoked, and Buemi moved up to third position for Race 12. Buemi would have been in P8 otherwise.
FIA revoked Buemi’s penalty after receiving additional footage from Envision Racing.
Envision Racing contested the penalty, handing in additional footage to the FIA from Buemi’s roll-hoop camera. This footage was not available, while the penalty was given. Mortara agreed with the decision of the FIA which deemed the move from Buemi as was well within the rules.
For the FIA, it was clear that there was nothing wrong with the manoeuvre from Buemi. As he was “always in control of his car” and the contact happened as he was fully alongside Mortara’s car. Further, Mortara stated to the FIA that “he barely felt the contact”, which helped to come to the decision. The penalty and the one penalty point were revoked.
“The driver of Car 16 argued that the New Element shows that his overtaking manoeuvre was legit, that he was always in control of his car and that when the slight contact between the two cars occurred, he was fully alongside Car 48.”
“The driver of Car 48 agreed with what the driver of Car 16 said and added that he barely felt the contact. Upon careful consideration of the circumstances, the Stewards find that no single party bears whole or predominant responsibility for the collision.”
“Therefore, the Stewards decide to reverse the Decision 12. As a result the penalty (i.e. five second time penalty and one penalty point) on Car 16 is removed and the Stewards determine that no further action will be taken in relation to this collision.”
What does this mean for the Jakarta race results and the championship?
The FIA revoking Buemi’s penalty put him up into third place for the Jakarta E-Prix. This demoted Nico Müller from Andretti into fourth place. While the penalty still counted, Buemi finished in P8. For the top 10 of the Jakarta E-Prix, some position changes were in order. The now correct order of the top 10 is:
- Ticktum
- Mortara
- Buemi
- Müller
- Da Costa
- Cassidy
- Barnard
- Bird
- Frijns
- Rowland
For the Driver Standings, it meant there was a small change in order. After the Jakarta E-Prix, Buemi would have been originally in P12 of the Driver Standings. Because of the decision to revoke the penalty, Buemi now has more points. That brought him up to P10 for the driver standings.
