Formula One confirmed that the Austrian GP will occupy a permanent slot on the F1 world championship calendar until 2041. The new contract, signed four years before the previous agreement with promoter Projekt Spielberg GmbH & Co KG was due to lapse, therefore elevates the Styrian round alongside Miami as one of the longest‑secured events in the sport.
The challenge of the Red Bull Ring
Nestled amid rolling Alpine pastures, the Red Bull Ring presents a compact yet unforgiving 4.318‑kilometre challenge. First, drivers blast along three steeply graded straights that demand ruthless deployment of hybrid power units. Next, they tackle the tight uphill hairpin at Turn Three before, finally, plunging towards the sweeping Rindt right‑hander. Named after Austria’s maiden world champion Jochen Rindt, this high‑speed corner rewards commitment while punishing even minor mistakes.
History of Spielberg on the F1 calendar
Historically, Spielberg welcomed F1 in 1970, when the original Österreichring debuted. Subsequently, the undulating track hosted seventeen consecutive editions until safety concerns forced organisers to pause the race after 1987. Nevertheless, investment revived the venue as the shortened A1‑Ring from 1997 to 2003. Afterwards, an eleven‑year hiatus ensued. However, sustained backing from Red Bull co‑founder Dietrich Mateschitz enabled a comprehensive rebuild, and therefore the Austrian GP returned in 2014.
Modern winners at the Styrian Hills
Since then, modern stars have cemented their reputations in the Styrian hills. Reigning double world champion Max Verstappen has triumphed four times, thereby delighting the Orange Army that floods the valley each July. Similarly, Nico Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas boast two victories apiece, whereas Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and George Russell each own a single win.

Looking ahead: Stability and Growth
Looking ahead, the extended agreement provides stability for teams, sponsors, and regional tourism authorities alike. Moreover, Formula One Management can continue developing sustainability programmes at the circuit, while local stakeholders gain confidence to upgrade transport links, accommodation, and fan facilities. Consequently, future F1 Austrian GPs, at least until 2041, promise spectacle.
