Fernando Alonso took Aston Martin’s best finish of the 2025 season at the Hungarian GP, with teammate Lance Stroll also finishing in the top 10.
After missing FP1 on Friday due to a back injury, it seemed like Alonso could be out for the count at the Hungaroring. However, the Spaniard bounced back to take an incredible P5 finish in Sunday’s race. The Aston Martin showed impressive pace all weekend, as praised by Alonso in his post-race media interview.
“Yeah, definitely very happy. You know, P5, the best result of the year. The best result as a team, you know, 16 points before the summer break. It feels good and yeah, we were a lot faster than the Sauber (laughs). No, but you know, it was one of those weekends that everything feels so right.
“Since pre-practise, good quality yesterday, good race, good execution today, good tyre management. So yeah, nothing more we could ask.”
Feeling optimistic heading into summer break
Aston Martin have had a difficult run of races prior to the Hungarian GP, qualifying 19th and 20th in Spa-Francorchamps last week. Despite not knowing what changes in the car lead to their improved performance, it gives the team a good benchmark of what the car is capable of and keep the positive momentum going after the break.
“Definitely more optimistic, you know, for the second part of the year. We really needed this result. Spa last week, we were at the bottom of the list. And now we are P5 and P7. So we need to learn what is the difference between the two tracks. What we did different to the car and try to apply those learnings into the next race.”
Stroll happy with Aston’s performance
Lance Stroll was also cheerful in his post-race interview. A seventh-place finish brought six more points on top of Alonso’s ten, resulting in a substantial points haul for the Silverstone-based team in Hungary.
Similar to his teammate, the Canadian driver also expressed that the team are unsure what has lead to their success in Hungary.
“Yeah. Really, really happy with it. From the first lap of FP1 to the last lap of the race, the car was in a nice window, so it was good.
“I think there’s lots to learn from this weekend. To understand, because I think we don’t fully understand why we’re competitive this week and we were last last week.
“So yeah, we need to try and learn what we can from this week and put the car in that window in more places. Because, yeah, we want to be at this level of competitiveness more weekends.”
