Alex Dunne’s dominant Feature Race win at Spa-Francorchamps has been clouded by a post-race penalty. The Irishman received a 10-second time penalty added to his post-race time.
According to the stewards’ report, Car 17, driven by Dunne, failed to engage the start set-up procedure at the beginning of the Formation Lap for Race 2. This process is mandatory for all drivers to ensure safety procedures are followed.
Dunne claimed the victory after the race was red-flagged on lap 21 of 23. The McLaren academy driver drove a clinical race from start to finish. Demonstrating his race craft and talent in the wet weather conditions. This was particularly more impressive as Dunne held a 4-second lead over his competitors before the race was abruptly ended.
Following the penalty, Dunne will be stripped of the win and points achieved during the race. Those 25 points would have seen the Irishman reclaim the championship lead that he lost to Richard Verschoor. Now, Dunne will have his eyes set on redemption during next week’s race weekend at the Hungaroring.
Roman Staněk has claimed his maiden Formula 2 victory after several post-race penalties have been awarded.
