Colton Herta took his second IndyCar pole position in a row in Toronto with a sub-minute lap time. Alex Palou and Marcus Armstrong finished out the Top 3.
We enter IndyCar qualifying in Toronto with Andretti Global driver’s Kyle Kirkwood and Colton Herta toped the charts in Practice 1 and Practice 2 respectively.
Round 1 of qualifying was divided into 2 groups, with each of the Top 6 moving to Round 2. The Top 6 of Round 2 moved on to the Firestone Fast 6 to fight for Pole Position.
The No. 26 had issued with its breaks with Markus Ericsson in the car. With Ericsson in Group 2, the No.26 team had more time to fix the issue.
Round 1 Group 1
Scott Dixon had the fastest lap at the start of the session with a 1:04.7159. Felix Rosenqvist moved to the top with a 1:01.1386 on green walled tires. Dixon toped the charts with a 1:00.9294 of blacked walled tires.
Nolan Siegan hit a bump into Turn 16 causing him to take to the runoff. Many drivers had issues in this spot. Christian Lundgaard was at the top 7 minutes in with green wall tires with 1:00.8529.
Louis Foster complained about something broken on his No.45 car. After a quick look, the No.45 team set him back out. The Top 6 with a minute left was Lundgaard, Dixon Rosenqvist, Rahal, and Foster.
Race winner, Kyle Kirkwood, took to the top with under minute time with a 59.9069. Callum Ilott moved to second, with Will Power in third. With the Arrow McLaren’s in the elimination zone, Siegel was just shy of the Top 6 with Lundgaard also unable to move on.
Kirkwood, Power, Dixon, Ilott, Rahal, and Foster moved onto Round 2 in Toronto.
Round 1 Group 2
After everyone set their first timed lap, Josef Newgarden was on top with a 1:02.7559. Soon after Marcus Armstrong, Markus Ericsson, Devlin DeFrancesco, and Alex Palou had their time in P1. Christian Rasmussen ended up on the top 5 minutes in with a 1:00.7062.
Newgarden found himself back in first with a 1:00.6731. Christian Rasmussen brushed the wall as he sits in P2. With everyone on the softest green walled tires, Palou moved to P1 with a 1:00.2714. Later, Herta went faster than the reigning champion with a 1:00.2610. Armstrong set a stellar lap, taking P1 with a 1:00.2434.
With the checkered flag flying, Rinus VeeKay briefly found him self on the top, with Armstrong taking the top spot.
Armstrong, VeeKay, Palou, Ericsson, Herta, and Pato O’Ward advanced into Round 2 in Toronto.
Round 2
Once everyone set their first lap, Palou set the fastest time with a 1:01.1044 VeeKay had a brief locked up and complained of a flat spot on his used green tires. Kirkwood went to the top with a 1:00.6035.
Scott Dixon locked up and ended up in the run-off, he was in P8. Palou heads to the top with a 1:00.3836. With most improving, Kirkwood was in P1 with a 59.9271. Power also had a sub minute time with a 59:9767. Rahal knocked out his teammate, ending in P4.
Kirkwood, Power, Herta, Rahal, Palou, and Armstrong advanced to the Firestone Fast 6 , as IndyCar qualifying in Toronto reached its crescendo.
Firestone Fast 6 in Toronto
Palou set in first with 2 minutes into the session with a 1:00.8379. Herta moved to the top with a 1:00.4516 on an older green walled tire. Rahal moved to third with a 1:00.8600. Armstrong moved to second with a 1:00.4809.
Herta tried to improve as Armstrong took the top spot. Herta was able to take back provisonal pole with a sub-minute 59.8320. Kyle Kirkwood was not able to match his teammate staying in P6.
Colton Herta got NTT Pole Award, two in a row in Toronto. Palou and Armstrong finish out the Top 3.
