Mari Boya topped off a successful British GP weekend with a win in the F3 Feature Race. A result he admitted made him ‘super proud’ as the Campos driver moves to fourth in the championship standings.
Boya’s season started slowly, with three retirements in the first three races. However, as the season has progressed the Campos driver has built up his performance, reaching the podium in Monza.
Leaving Silverstone, Mari Boya has a three podium streak but moving from the bottom step of the podium to the top in the British GP Feature Race.
Boya spoke about how happy the win made him. He said, “Thank you. I am super happy. Yesterday we had really good pace, so I was confident of racing on a dry track. I wanted to race on the slicks, but it wasn’t the case.”
With the changing conditions on track, Boya noted how important it was to stay focused on the strategy as well as keeping the car on the road.
“The most important things was to be calm, read the situation as always, as fast as possible and once I saw that it started to rain a bit, I didn’t care what the rest were doing, I knew that the last sector was properly wet, and I said to my engineer if you believe in me let’s go. Happy that he believed in me at that point, it was a difficult situation, but we managed it really well. Super proud to be here, super happy and enjoying the moment.“
Treacherous conditions
With the rain coming down, it was hard for drivers to see the road and their rivals around them making the race all the more dangerous. Boya spoke about the visibility as the race progressed.
“At the beginning it was really nice. The grip and everything was really nice but once the Safety Car came it was impossible to see anything. We were super slow on the straights, and I didn’t have much control of the car.”
“Even the Safety Car, who was much higher than us, he was struggling in some places to keep it under control. I knew I had to be calm and really precise in those moments. In the end, it was quite tricky, but it’s nice to finish like this.”
Carrying the momentum
Leaving Silverstone with two podiums was an incredibly strong weekend for the Campos driver, and he admitted it was something he felt him and his team, deserved. With their stronger performances over the past weeks building up to this moment.
“I think we are starting to perform as we have deserved. Pace is looking really strong, we just did a hat trick of podiums, in Austria and two here in a row. Looking really good, and super excited about the rest of the season, I feel super prepared.”
Now with a few weeks break before the next round in Belgium, teams will reset and Mari Boya will be looking to continue his results into the next race weekend.
