Alex Dunne‘s Rodin Motorsport has been disqualified from the Austrian GP F2 Feature Race following his front plank failing to comply with the minimum thickness required in the Technical Regulations.
Dunne, who was leading the F2 championship coming into the Austrian GP weekend, saw a stunning feature race fighting against his title rivals, crossing the line second. Verschoor moved into the championship lead, but Dunne kept the damage minimal.
Unfortunately for the Irishman, post-race scrutinizing saw the plank on Car 17 noted for a potential breach of the minimum thickness required. The plank wear was measured at 3.37 mm and 3.27 mm at the periphery of the two designated areas. This was less than the designated minimus thickness of 4 mm.
Following Dunne’s disqualification, the Irishman falls further from the championship lead, with 90 points to Verschoor’s 114. For the race, it pushed Leonardo Fornaroli into second and Jak Crawford into the final podium position.
For Dunne, it was a tough blow in what has been a strong race weekend including his Formula One debut in FP1 where he placed fourth which impressed teams and fans alike.
While the disqualification puts Dunne on the back foot, the order in Formula 2 changes rapidly from week to week. With Dunne’s performance throughout the season so far, a charge to retake the lead is not out of the realm of possibility.
