Pierre Gasly’s 2025 F1 Monaco Grand Prix was eventful but ultimately ended in disappointment.
Early in the race, he capitalised on a VSC period triggered by Gabriel Bortoleto’s crash. The Alpine driver made an opportunistic pit stop alongside other drivers. However, his race took a turn on lap 9 when he collided with Yuki Tsunoda at the Nouvelle Chicane.
Gasly appeared to lose control under braking, crashing into the back of the Red Bull and scattering debris across the track while he drove back to the pits.
This incident prompted a temporary pit lane closure and led to a stewards’ investigation involving both drivers. The crash effectively ended Gasly’s chances in the race.
Gasly surprised by Tsunoda’s breaking pattern during 2025 Monaco GP
When asked by the media about the cause of the crash, Gasly admitted that he made a mistake a corner earlier. Though following Tsunoda’s breaking pattern closely, the Alpine driver was not prepared to change his race line as Tsunoda braked on the left.
As he broke on the right on the laps before, Gasly crashed into the back of the Red Bull. This marked the end of the 2025 F1 Monaco GP for Gasly.
“I just didn’t expect Yuki to move under braking out of the tunnel.”
“I made a mistake the corner before I was very close and um every lap he was braking on the right, this lap he started braking on the left and I went to the normal line, and then he moved back onto the racing line, but it was too late so uh yeah that’s quite sad.”
Bad qualifying cost Alpine the race
Gasly admitted that the early end of the F1 Monaco GP did not only hurt him but also his whole team. As they already had problems during Qualifying, they had to risk a lot in the Race. Ultimately, Gasly wanted to finish the race, if not for him, for his team at Alpine.
“[It’s] just painful for the whole team. I think ultimately we just need to understand why we lacked in qualifying and I think that’s what really cost us today. It was a bit of a gamble, but yeah, for sure I would have preferred to race until the end for the guys.”
