Fernando Alonso started the 2025 F1 Monaco Grand Prix on hard tyres and positioned himself well in the midfield.
As pit strategies unfolded, he took advantage of Liam Lawson backing up the field by pitting early. He rejoined in seventh place.
Alonso ran as high as sixth and looked set for a strong points finish, for the first time this season. However, his race fell apart midway through when his car suffered a mechanical failure, forcing him to retire.
Even if the failure hadn’t occurred, he would have dropped behind Isack Hadjar and Esteban Ocon due to a required second stop.
Engine failure during the 2025 Monaco GP costed Alonso his first points of the season
When asked by the media, Alonso admitted his disappointment due to the early end of the 2025 F1 Monaco GP. Though his car had a problem with the Energy Recovery System (ERS) early on, Alonso kept the 6th position.
While he drove with 160 horsepower less, his race came to an end as his engine stopped. Although unhappy with the results, Alonso claimed that they need to improve for the next race.
“Disappointed because I think the race was difficult from our side. We had to manage many things since lap 15. We had an ERS problem, so we didn’t have the electrical part of the engine.”
“So, it was 160 horsepower less. Here in Monaco, it’s not crucial, the power. So we kept the 6th position alive for quite long.”
“But, the engine stopped. And, yeah, it was not the end of the weekend that we wanted. But today, it is not down to luck. It’s not that a wrong safety car or something came from the sky and hit our car.
“Today was something wrong on our engine that we need to investigate and try to improve for next time.”
Alonso has to “wait and see” what happens in the races after the 2025 Monaco GP
Though he did not score any points thus far this season, Alonso was certain he is competitive.
The Spaniard told the media the team and him had to “wait and see” what will happen at the next races and hope for a points finish in the near future.
“Yeah, probably. But, you know, as long as I’m competitive. It’s not that I feel slow or just have contact with the wall or with people in the first lap.”
“And because of my mistakes, I’m not scoring any points. I think I’m driving at a high level. And I just need to wait and see what happens in the next races.”
