After the first qualifying was cancelled yesterday during the Formula E Tokyo E-Prix, due to heavy rain. The cars fought today for their starting position in warm and humid conditions.
Pascal Wehrlein topped todays FP3 session, while current Formula E championship leader closed the sheets in last. Though FP3 was calm after yesterday’s Race in Tokyo, the first qualifying this weekend, could bring out chaos. As the teams and drivers only had one practice session in dry conditions.
Group A
Group A made their way out on the grid. With 12 minutes on the clock, the teams were able to use fresh tires, as they weren’t used in the earlier stages of the Formula E Tokyo E-Prix.
Jean Eric Vergne, was the first one that went for some push laps, just as Mitch Evans in the Jaguar started to set some fast times as well. With 5 minutes left on the clock for group A, Barnard goes for another push lap, that almost put him in the wall.
Lucas Di Grassi topped the timesheets of group A as 4 minutes were left on the clock. With only 7 hundredths ahead of Norman Nato.
Red Flag with 3 minutes remaining on the clock. As Mitch Evans crashed into the wall at Turn 16. Evans lost his rear tyre in the process. Though Evans time on the sheet would put him in the Duels, it is unclear if he could keep his lap. Nevertheless, he won’t be able to drive in the duels.
While the time is still being stopped, it is clear, that Evans’ lap time was deleted and Nyck de Vries claimed fourth position.
With 3 minutes left on the clock, the drivers were back on track, as it was cleared again. While all 10 drivers were out, Di Grassi and De Vries went out last, which could mean they could only do one flying lap.
The last minute of the Qualifying during the Tokyo E-Prix started for Group A with all of them pushing for another fast lap. With Lucas Di Grassi, Norman Nato, Oliver Rowland and Jean Eric Vergne going through to the Duels.
Eliminated: Taylor Barnard, Nyck de Vries, Nick Cassidy, Zane Maloney, Sébastien Buemi, Stoffel Vandoorne and Mitch Evans
Group B
With the first group done with qualifying, Group B headed out on track to warm up their tires. While the teams had the chance to learn what di Grassi was doing to get his fast lap, it will show at the end of the 12 minutes who is going through to the Duels.
Though, Robin Frjins is set for a difficult Sunday, as he’ll face a 20-place grid drop. This penalty came because he got a new MGU in his car. With Jake Hughes and Frijns being the firsts to push for a fast lap. Shortly followed by the rest of the Group.
Jake Dennis and Nico Müller, pressured for a good result, as the first Race of the Tokyo E-Prix didn’t go as planned. While Müller finished in P12 and Dennis getting disqualified, they were eager to go through to the Duels.
With 4 minutes left on the clock, the first cars started to go for their flying lap. While Edoardo Mortara set the fastest lap with a 1:13,810, he was shortly followed by Wherlein, Ticktum, and Dennis.
Though the Porsche Powertrains looked good in the dry, with three of their cars in the top 4 with only 1 minute left on the clock. While Wehrlein continues to hold the fastest lap, Maximilian Günther put himself in front of Dennis. Double Yellow at turn 12, as Nico Müller went into the wall.
Though this crash didn’t have too much impact on the field as Dan Ticktum went up to third. While Pascal Wehrlein topped the sheets, followed by Edoardo Mortara and da Costa, making it the third car with a Porsche powertrain in the Duels.
Eliminated: Sam Bird, Maximilian Günther, Jake Dennis, David Beckmann, Jake Hughes, Nico Müller and Robin Frijns
