After his win in Saturday’s race, Oliver Rowland took pole position on Sunday morning ahead of the second race of the weekend.
The weather changed dramatically during the weekend. Yesterday warm and sunny, today it rained heavy during Qualifying and it is raining again in Monte-Carlo. Round 7 of the Formula E championship could be one for the history books with a wet Monaco E-Prix.
Sam Bird, meanwhile, continued to suffer in Monaco, starting Sunday’s race from the pit lane.
It’s Lights Out for the second race in Monte-Carlo
Rowland got a clean start, while the rest of the pack followed behind with no incidents in the first few corners. The tunnel being the only dry part of the circuit at this point of the race, the drivers tried to find grip on the rest of the track.
The first few laps finished without any damage to the cars. Though there wasn’t a lot of race action during the Monaco E-Prix to this point.
First Attack modes
The first drivers went through attack mode. Sebastien Buemi, Dan Ticktum and Jake Dennis could all take advantage of their attack mode, just as Vergne and Günther also went through Attack Mode.
De Vries got a black and white flag for breaking under moving. Vergne went on top with Rowland in second, with both of his attack modes still to use.
Hughes and Beckmann then found themselves under Investigation for causing a collision in the first corner, which resulted in a puncture for Beckmann.
Full Course Yellow: Di Grassi in the barrier early in the Race
The racing started again with 21 laps remaining for the Monaco E-Prix. Jake Hughes was awarded a five second penalty for causing a collision with David Beckmann.
Vergne could hold his position with around 3 seconds ahead of Rowland. While Buemi and Günther touched as Buemi tried to overtake him.
The trials of Dan Ticktum
Ticktum then hit the wall but he recovered his car, but came out at the end of the grid. This could have been a bigger crash, but was able to recover.
With only four cars that had left 8 minutes of attack mode and still 16 laps left it could benefit those four.
Safety Car and restart
The yellow flag came out at Turn 3 as Nico Müller hit the wall, which resulted in a safety car.
Vergne led the pack into the restart of the Monaco E-Prix as he set the pace at the front. The DS Penske driver had a good restart with Rowland right behind him.
While the top three remained unchanged, the cars in the middle field fought for every position with some small touches. Though there was some contact between Vergne and Rowland. Hughes and Evans were under investigation for causing a collision.
Fast and frantic action at Monaco E-Prix
As Rowland took his first attack mode, he was trying to overtake De Vries, but had to take the escape route. Though shortly after, Rowland overtook De Vries and is now in second place with 10 laps remaining of the Monaco E-Prix.
Rowland and Vergne were side by side, when De Vries passed both of them and using his attack mode to his advantage. While Rowland still at the front, De Vries was right behind him with two minutes left on his attack mode clock.
De Vries overtook Rowland and is now in front of Rowland, where he tried to put as much space between them as possible.
With active attack mode, Buemi overtook De Vries and led the Monaco E-Prix with only 7 laps to go. Most of the drivers now took their last attack mode, despite a few at the back, that still had two attack modes left. Evans had still 2 attack modes left which could mean he will take 8 minutes in one move.
The last 5 Laps
Buemi led the pack as the last 5 laps started, followed by Rowland and De Vries. With 3.396 seconds behind Buemi, Rowland needed to use is remaining 20 seconds of the attack mode to close the gap. But failed and Buemi stayed in front.
Without attack mode, De Vries lost places and is now in P5, while Cassidy and Da Costa took advantage of their attack mode.
Though normally the energy levels would matter at this point of the race, the wet conditions during the Monaco E-Prix made these not a problem. As most of the drivers had more than 20 % of energy left.
One Lap added and final
Due to the safety car earlier, 1 lap was added to the Monaco E-Prix. Barnard, Maloney and Ticktum received a 5 Second time penalty due to track limits.
Buemi led the pack in Monte-Carlo with only 2 laps remaining. With 4.642 seconds behind Buemi, Rowland fought to keep his second place while he tried to catch Buemi in the front.
Buemi started Round 7 in Monaco at eight on the grid and won the Monaco E-Prix. This marked his first win since 2022 and Envisions first win since 2023. With Rowland and Cassidy finishing the Podium.
