Fernando Alonso expressed his need for an upgrade with his current Aston Martin after the Saudi Arabian GP as they tried “many different set-ups” after the Saudi Arabian GP as the team focuses on 2026 with new hire, Adrian Newey.
Alonso ended this triple header with points at the grasp of his hands. However, the double World Champion has no points in the championship after the Saudi Arabian GP. On the other hand, his teammate, Lance Stroll has been able to give Aston Martin its only points in the first two rounds of the championship.
The Spaniard points to his AMR25 as the reason why he hasn’t “unlocked any pace” at this point of the season. Even though Aston Martin brought in Adrian Newey, he more focused on the 2026 car with the new regulation set. With Newey looking beyond 2025, this leaves Aston Martin in a gray area in this season where points are still on the line.
Doing whatever they can
Alonso did acknowledge that he was not blameless with his preference, but did note difficultly when he gives it everything he had with what he had at the Saudi Arabian GP.
“It is hard, because if I crash, then it is my mistake, but I am not satisfied with the position we are in,” Alonso told the media, “You push beyond the limits just to unlock some potential from the car, but it has been a difficult weekend.
The Aston Martin Driver and Team tried to do every they could with what they were given at the start of the season. However, all the changes made had little to no effect on the outcome on the timing sheet.
“We haven’t unlocked any pace, we’ve tried many different set-ups, and all of them more or less have the same outcome at the end of the lap, Alonso added, “So we really need something from the factory, and not trackside. I think we’ve run out of ideas at the moment.”
Hoping for a change or a miracle
The 43-year-old driver accepted the fact that it would take an in-race incident to get to the points with the current car the team had at the Saudi Arabian GP.
“We don’t have the pace to fight for the top 10, but we have the possibility as anything can happen, such as safety cars or mistake.”
“We will try to stay focused for the whole race, make no mistakes, and see what the final position is.”
